59 Women Share The Moment They Realized Loving Their Husband Wasn’t Enough To Stay

Marriage vows cover a lot of ground. Sickness and health, richer or poorer, till the Grim Reaper tears us apart. What they leave out is the fine print about secretly emptying the joint account or deciding the family dog should go to a shelter without telling anyone. A lot of scorned women are flocking online to compare notes on the exact moment the vows stopped applying.

A few viral threads asked wives to share the thing that made them call a lawyer, and the answers go far beyond dirty socks on the floor. Some stories are the final straw after years of smaller ones. Others are the first and only straw, coming from an oblivious narcissist who thought their actions were completely fine. Grab a drink, and maybe call your mom afterward.

Our dogs got in a fight over food he left on his nightstand. I broke it up and one of their fangs snagged my arm and ripped it open.

The entire time I was at the er to get fixed up, he was on the phone with his mother, loudly saying that *my* dog should be put down, even though *his* dog was the one who went apes**t.

When he shoved his phone in my face so his mom could argue with me about it, the nurse kicked him out of the hospital, then turned to me and said I should love myself enough to know I didn't deserve to be in a relationship like that.

We were at a Fourth of July party at the park when g*nsh*ts suddenly started. I was there with him and our 8-month-old baby in the stroller, and we were in a very dangerous situation with people sh**ting around us. Instead of making sure I and our baby were safe, he ran away and left us behind without even looking back or checking on us. I was left alone to protect myself and our baby while there was active g*nfire around us.

Until 1970, a woman who wanted out of her marriage had to prove her husband had done something awful. In most US states, divorce required legal grounds, meaning a judge had to agree that someone was at fault, usually because of adultery or cruelty.

California ended that with what is widely seen as the country's first true no-fault divorce law, which took effect in January 1970 under Governor Ronald Reagan. The other states followed over the next four decades, and New York was the last in 2010. Today "we want different things" is enough to end a marriage anywhere in the country, and the women in this thread still came with receipts.

I was losing chunks of my hair.. I would walk around wearing a beanie. He thought it would be funny to take it off of my head in front of everyone exposing my bald spots. I was in tears.

My ex husband and I had taken our boys to Disney. Crowded AF. I'm carrying our infant son while our oldest, who is on the spectrum and an eloper, takes off. I say "Hey grab him please". Obviously I had my hands full. He looks me in my face and says "Shut up b*tch”. I divorced him within 6 months. He came home to an empty house.

My ex-husband encouraged me to take a girls’ trip. When I came back, the locks were changed, another woman had moved in, and he threatened to call ICE if I entered the house I paid for with all my belongings still inside. I had a work visa and was the provider. I had 2 days left on my work visa, and unbeknownst to me, he had also withdrawn his immigration petition for me. I lost my home, my marriage, and my legal path here almost overnight.

And the numbers say those receipts mostly belong to wives. Michael Rosenfeld, a sociologist at Stanford, analyzed a national survey of couples and found that women started 69% of divorces among heterosexual marriages. Unmarried couples ended their relationships at about the same rate as each other, so the gap only appeared once a ring was involved. Rosenfeld's reading was that marriage still tends to work out better for husbands than for wives, which gives wives more reason to walk.

The day after I gave birth to our son, 1 month early so baby was in the NICU, my husband drove across the country to go on a week long fishing trip. I had surgery while he was gone, which he knew about and still left. I was left alone freshly postpartum and fresh out of surgery to care for our medically fragile newborn. Fun times.

My ex-husband and I were talking all night and we heard the living room window shatter at about 4am. He jumped off the bed and hid in our closet. *I* went to check what happened because our 2 young children were asleep in their room across the hall from us and someone needed to protect them. Thankfully it was just the delivery person who accidentally threw our newspaper too hard. I divorced him immediately!!

I was in the hospital and had been for over a week and my ex came to see me with my daughter and he hadn't said he missed me so I was reaching for the comfort and asked "did you guys miss me" in a cute tone to him and my daughter and he said "we miss eating" I left him when I left the hospital.

Researchers at the University of Denver asked divorced Americans to name the reasons their marriages ended. Roughly three quarters pointed to a lack of commitment, and more than half named too much conflict or infidelity. About one in four cited domestic violence. Most people gave several reasons at once, so a long list of smaller problems usually sits behind the one dramatic event that gets retold at dinner parties.

We were in Kenya visiting his father and he kept setting me up to have an "accident". First incident he took me snorkeling for my first ever time to a reef when the tide was coming in. I didn't know how to clear my mask or snorkel and kept getting hit by waves so I couldn't breathe. I literally began blacking out and lost control of my body, I began thinking "it's going to be so expensive to get my body back to the US". I would've drowned if a nearby boatman hadn't been watching and he came over and pulled me from the water into his boat. My ex was nowhere to be seen and didn't find me for another 20-30 minutes later in the boat. He later took me on a crocodile safari and got out of the boat trying to scare a large croc out of some bushes, if he had been successful, the crocodile would've capsized our boat into heavily infested waters. When that didn't work he had me pose for a photo by a hippo pool a couple weeks later in Masai Mara and he "lost" his footing and fell into me. If I had toppled backwards I would've fallen into the hippo pool, but I happened to fall forward. I filed for divorce a week after we got home and moved out.

We didn’t get divorced but we were engaged. While we were planning our wedding, specifically the entrance to the reception, he was pitching to me what could only be described as flash dance with his best friends to the hustlers anthem. Like, the first time walking into the room as husband and wife and I wasn’t even a thought. And when I pointed it out he said “well you need a groom to have the wedding, so good luck planning your dream wedding without me.” And I did. And I have never made a better decision in my life.

I left a guy because he didn’t check on me after a tornado touched down by my workplace. I’m married to the man that actually did.

Money is a repeat offender. Jeffrey Dew, a family researcher at Utah State University, found in a 2012 study that couples who argued about finances weekly were over 30% more likely to divorce than couples who argued about it a few times a month.

Then there is financial infidelity, the term for secret accounts, hidden debt, and purchases nobody was told about. Surveys from the National Endowment for Financial Education suggest roughly four in ten adults who share finances with a partner have kept some kind of money secret. A husband who quietly drains the joint account is doing something very common, and very expensive.

One time my ex and I went to a popular waterfall spot. As we were crossing the river, I slipped and started to get dragged down the river. I turned to look back at him and yelled “Help!” He just waved at me. I was dragged across several rocks and ended up with road rash across the entire lower half of my body. When I asked him why he waved, he said “What the f*** did you want me to do, jump in and save you?” Yes! We are divorced because he cheated on me with one of his high school students.

I caught him having an affair, and his response was to tell me I should be thankful he hadn't kicked me out to move her in, and if I wanted to keep my comfy life I'd just look the other way (I was a SAHM to HIS two kids).

I started packing my stuff and was out in two days. Last thing he said to me before I left was that I was: "Too stupid to make it without him, and he gave me a month before I came crawling back begging for another chance." Anyways, that was 16 years ago, I'm happily married to an amazing man, have a successful career, and a wonderful son.

My ex? He lost everything (including his job, the mistress, the house, his kids etc) a year after I left. Sweet, sweet, karma.

I had just given birth. I hadn't eaten in 37 hours. He slept at home while I was in the hospital all night. He was there for the birth the next day, and my mom brought us burgers so I could finally eat. He sat and ate while I held our baby. I asked if he could bring me my burger so I could take a bite, and he sighed like he was super annoyed and put the burger on the table next to the hospital bed. I was really nervous to hold the baby with one arm (brand new mom, not used to juggling everything yet) so I asked if he could hold it up so I could take a bite. He snapped at me that he just wanted to relax because HE WAS TIRED.

The daily workload is another source of friction. In 1989 sociologist Arlie Hochschild published The Second Shift, based on years spent observing working couples. She calculated that women with full-time jobs did about an extra month of 24-hour days of housework and childcare every year compared with their husbands. Plenty of wives in threads like this one describe the same arrangement: two people with jobs, and only one of them managing the household. The husband usually considers this fine because he has never had to count the hours.

We were 21 and 22, I had just had a baby 5 months before, we went swimming with friends. He picked me up out of the water, threw me over his shoulder and pulled the back of my bottoms down in front of everyone and laughed about it. He was the only one laughing. I’m talking women, men, and children present.

Was having a miscarriage around 11ish weeks and asked my ex if he could just be there for me emotionally/physically and he said he couldn’t because he had his own stuff to worry about. I cried and bled in the bathroom alone while he sat on the couch and presumably played games.

Dropped two cups of boiling hot tea on myself in a cafe and he continued with his phone call conversation. People came running to ask me if I was alright, divorce is pending.

Communication breakdowns follow a similar pattern. John Gottman, the researcher famous for predicting divorce from couples' arguments, reports that about 85% of stonewallers are men. Stonewalling means shutting down mid-argument by going silent, leaving the room, or answering in grunts. Gottman's lab measured heart rates and found that stonewallers are often overwhelmed, with pulses above 100 beats per minute, and shutting down is their attempt to calm down. That explains the behavior, but it does nothing for the wife still standing in the kitchen waiting for an answer.

After my second was born I was struggling with ppd and baby’s sleep schedule was off. He was awake all night for months. I was exhausted. One night was especially bad when he woke up multiple times and I was sobbing for help and had the audacity to ask him to get up with the baby at 4 am so I could sleep. His response was ‘I can’t I have to work tomorrow’ that was the nail in the coffin. It took me 3 years to get the pieces together and to be financially stable enough to leave but I did in 2018. I just remarried the love of my life. I’m so happy.

He cracked my back for me… It’s was so good I was still for a moment. He immediately started getting his s**t to leave. When asked why it was because he thought he k****d me. His first instinct was to LEAVE.

Some entries in this kind of thread go far beyond bad habits. The CDC's national survey on intimate partner violence estimates that about one in four US women has experienced severe physical violence from a partner at some point in her life. Control can also happen without any violence. Sociologist Evan Stark coined the term "coercive control" in 2007 for a pattern of monitoring, isolating, and restricting a partner's money and movements. England and Wales made it a crime in 2015, with a maximum sentence of five years in prison.

We were at a wedding. I couldn’t find my purse. He was talking to someone and I asked him did you see my purse. He said ya, it’s over there. When I walked away I heard him say that should keep her busy.

my ex husband did many worse things but one that always sticks with me is during my pregnancy I was extremely ill the entire time throwing up. one night I jumped out of bed and was throwing up in a bucket on the floor by the door. he got out of bed, stepped over my vomiting body, filled a glass with water and drank it then got back into bed and turned the light off on me.
i thought the water was going to be for me.

He got mad at me because I was in pain from the medicine wearing off after emergency wisdom tooth removal. Something about being in pain and having the person who is supposed to love and care for you treat you terribly just feels difference. Its a different kind of evil because you are vunerable. My current person made soup for my mom when she was sick when we weren’t even officially dating!

So when do these women finally file? Julie Brines and Brian Serafini at the University of Washington studied divorce filings in Washington State from 2001 to 2015 and found two spikes every year, in March and August. Their explanation was that couples hold out through the winter holidays and the summer vacation, hoping for a fresh start, and file once the season is over.

Afterward, most people do better than they expected. Psychologist E. Mavis Hetherington followed about 1,400 families for 30 years and found that most divorced adults adjusted within a few years, and many came out more confident than before. The First Wives Club put it more bluntly in 1996: "Don't get mad, get everything."

I had a boyfriend who worked in the same office as me and one time the fire alarm went off (not a drill) and he literally ran past me, didn’t acknowledge me after looking right at me, wiggled his way infront of a bunch of other people (including older) people and ran down the stairwell. This was the most ick inducing F you I’ve ever seen. I knew so badly in that moment what i was dealing with.

night after my hysterectomy, my ex husband decided he was going to sleep in the back bedroom and leave me alone, fresh from surgery. I was also on blood thinners due to clotting disorder. he left me alone that night without water, without pain meds, without anything. I crawled to the kitchen on my hands and knees to get my meds. slept at the kitchen table. he didn't check on me all night. came out around 9 am.

I was 36 weeks pregnant with our 2nd child. Husband knew I had an OB appointment that day. Dr. checked me and I was 5 cm dilated and was convinced that I would have the baby in the next 24 hours. I tried calling my husband 5 times to let him know. He didn't answer and never called me back to make sure I wasn't having the baby! He came home from work 5 hours later and seemed annoyed that I was so hurt by his behavior. We are no longer married.

There was a major hurricane approaching, he said he had to run to his parents house really quick and he’d come back for me and our pets. He didn’t come back, our house flooded up to the second floor.

This reminds me of when I finally made the decision to divorce.. the final straw was when hurricane Maria came to Florida.. I was so scared, preparing my home, taking our dogs to shelters, trying to decide to evacuate or not.. I had a baby. I really thought I was going to lose my home.. as I was packing our stuff, my babies stuff, making sure everything in the home secured.. the only thing he was worry about and the only thing he grabbed as we were leaving to the shelter was his TV and his PlayStation!!!!! I looked around.. all my neighbors.. men.. were taking their wives and kids out to safe, their were all working making sure their houses were prepared for impact, they were helping others … and my loser husband was worry about a PlayStation!!! It was so embarrassing!! … after there experience I finally filed for divorce.. I just couldn’t deal with that Pete Pan anymore!! Best decision ever!!!

My Exs sister was pregnant. Her and her husband had watched a scary movie in theater and came home, they went into their apartment and he saw himself in the mirror. He freaked out thinking it was an intruder and pushed his pregnant wife into the apartment and ran out. They are still together.

I had my tubes tied, my ex husband picked up a shift the same day when he was supposed to be helping me with recovery because i couldn’t walk more than a few feet without being in excruciating pain. My mom had to take care of me instead, it was humiliating.

I was sharing how devastating it still is that my sister was m******d by a serial k**ler years prior and the damage it did to my family. My ex said, "You just need to get over it". Needless to say, I immediately 'just got over' him!

There were many reasons, but this is a solid one: he was pissed at me during a Durham Bulls baseball game. When it was over, he took my phone and gave me a dollar to figure out the bus system. At this point, it was near midnight in downtown Durham, and I was left with a dollar and no phone to get myself home! I was sobbing and petrified!

#42

My car was run off the road and when I called my ex he asked if the car was all right. Got to my office and immediately called a lawyer.

#43

My ex and I were on a beach in St. Thomas. He saw a huge snake under my chair and ran about 20 feet away, then yelled back that there was a snake under my seat. Years later, I had surgery for ovarian cancer. During the discharge process from the hospital, we were told I couldn’t be left alone for 48 hours in case I started hemorrhaging. He brought me home and left to go buy a new car. He was gone for five hours.

We were white water rafting and trained that if someone across the boat from you falls off to reach over and grab them by the vest to pull them back on. I was sitting across from my bf. We hit a rock, I go overboard into the cold water, and I look up to see my now ex staring at me, frozen. The teenage kid sitting behind me reached in and grabbed me. The whole boat was like after that.

We weren’t married but when I was in labor with our daughter my contractions were so bad and painful I was having diarrhea bc I couldn’t help it. Instead of helping me he just couldn’t stop saying how gross and disgusting it was that it happened. I got up out of the bed mid contraction and helped myself. That’s when I knew.

#47

Even after divorce I text him that our teenage daughter is having emergency appendectomy surgery. He texts back four hours later “thx for letting me know”. Never asked about any details or outcome.

#48

We took a trip to a national park and I thought “please universe, if he isn’t for me give me a sign…” a couple of hours later he is driving my car and goes into a HUGE pothole and we got a flat tyre. We stopped in the middle of nowhere and he goes “I have no idea what to do” while standing there, so I changed the tyre pretty much by myself and when we get in the car again he said “I’m so glad you are my GF, any other woman would have broken up with me over this” and that’s when I realised, he was giving me NOTHING and he knew I would accept it…

#49

I choked on food at dinner, managed to clear it but was still having trouble swallowing and was coughing and started to have a panic attack and managed to say "I'm so scared"... and he got up from the table where he had been looking at me like went and sat on the couch and turned the TV on... while I was still struggling to clear my airway.
I didn't leave for another year.

#50

My ex husband claimed he was a “bad boy” and all that jazz and then one night something came crashing down in our house and instead of grabbing his bad boy pewpew to go see what was happening; I thought we were being robbed, he grabbed the covers and slid under them shaking.

I grabbed a baseball bat and went and investigated myself. A picture fell off the wall and crashed the stuff on the table under it. I cleaned it up. He was still in bed. Didn’t come out once to ask what it was. I left him shortly after this. This was just the straw moment. Many things like this had happened.

#51

I bled too much after my son was born and I was in the OR longer than anticipated....he left with his family to get something to eat. When I was brought to my room I was completely alone.

#52

My very first date after leaving my ex husband was at a restaurant/bar to see a live band. The man and I were standing at the bar to get a drink when a small fight broke out. He jumped BEHIND me and shrieked. You know what? I’m gonna go. Thanks.

#53

I was 9 months pregnant and started to go into labor at midnight. He said he was gonna go back to sleep because he was gonna be tired, so he wanted to make sure HE was rested up, as my contractions were getting stronger. he told me to wake him up when the baby was coming.

#54

A bear was running down the sidewalk (it was trying to get away from a ranger after it came into town because some nerd put out their trash far too early with no proper lid) Anyway, he took off down the sidewalk yelling "run" (I know you're not supposed to run from bears now, we were buzzed and weren't aware til after) I caught up to him in the store he went into and I said "hah! you left me!" and he said "well you have more meat on you" and gestured to my body.

#55

We got swarmed by yellow jackets while cleaning the yard. As I was running away I felt his hand try to grab my arm to run past me and he slipped and fell and that is the only reason he didn't push past me.

#56

My car smashed into the side of a mountain at 55mph. After 911 was auto-dialed, I called him to let him know the ambulance was coming to take me to the ER. 8.5 hours later, he hadn’t called to check on me once, hadn’t come to be with me, didn’t handle any of the car or insurance stuff, and wouldn’t answer my calls when I was being discharged. The hospital called in a social worker and tried ordering an uber for me home (45 mins away).

#57

One time it was my birthday, and I got pneumonia, I was bedridden, and my ex suddenly decided to fly several states away to visit his parents randomly. The next morning I had to take our three kids to school and I had to pull over several times during that 4 mile drive to breathe and cry. I had to drive myself to urgent care two times while he was gone because of the pneumonia.

#58

My ex had his daughter over for the weekend, on Saturday night we woke up to all our fire alarms screaming. He grabbed his phone, put his trainers and jacket on and grabbed his motorbike keys and ran outside. I grabbed his not even 2 year old daughter, her winter sleep suit a blanket and his dog. I was still in my shorts and Tshirt. No shoes, nothing. It was minus 7 Celsius (19 Fahrenheit) thankfully our home want on fire but it filled with smoke. It was the neighbour downstairs. He fell asleep drunk and burnt his kitchen down. I had to phone for the fire brigade too, while consoling his daughter. It took hours to air the house out of smoke, it stank for weeks afterwards. I never looked at him the same after that.

#59

Mine was, on our first date, we were playing chasing each other in a park at night. And i had this gut wrenching feeling to look back while running. His smile and eyes were not it, they looked predatory. Idk man my heart was sinking and i just kept running faster and hid somewhere. He kept calling saying "come out baby girl" something along those lines. I didn't come out till dawn. I asked some passing stranger to call a cab to my mom's house and ghosted him. 3 months later i found out he was arrested for m****r and sa. I'll never forget that day, it made me never doubt my intuition.
