Ellsworth is a self-taught artist and comics creator whose work has long revolved around the kinds of images that seem to appear when imagination is left to wander. His drawings and woodcuts feature unusual creatures, monsters, plants, machines, and impossible objects, often packed tightly together into elaborate compositions. His approach to making art is also deliberately intuitive; when creating his woodcuts, for example, he has described cutting shapes and characters without knowing exactly what the finished piece will become, then exploring the possibilities that emerge.
