Comedy fans know that you can deliver a punchline in different ways. You can tell it as a story to keep listeners entertained, or you can cut the fat and get straight to the point.

We laugh when we hear or see something funny, like these posts from Two Sentence Comedy. But many of us likely know less about laughter than we think.

Scientist and former Harvard professor Dr. William A. Haseltine recently wrote an insightful piece titled The Purpose of Laughter, arguing that chuckles and giggles are more than reactions to humor.

Dr. Haseltine pointed out that laughter is a sound older than speech. He said it’s similar to how animals produce “play sounds” to signal friendliness and prevent rough play.

“Spontaneous laughter is the kind that bursts out during play, delight, embarrassment, or contagion. Someone else laughs, and the sound pulls us along,” Dr. Haseltine noted.

Comedy comes in different forms, but the most relatable ones touch on the mundanities of life. According to social psychologist and academic Dara Greenwood, that’s one reason improv comedy works so well.

"Improv comedy humor works by exploring the comedic potential in everyday situations. They subvert what we normally think of a situation by taking a silly perspective that exposes how rigid we are,” she explained.
