Dollhouses, vehicles, and animals aren’t the only popular miniatures. Tiny models of offices, or even entire cities, are quite a sight. People are so attracted to them that it’s hardly surprising that a report shows the global miniatures market size reached $2.85 billion in 2024. It reflects robust growth driven by increasing demand across hobbyist, gaming, and collectible segments.
The market is poised to expand at a CAGR of 7.2% from 2025 to 2033, with the total market valuation expected to attain $5.37 billion by 2033. Moreover, the global model kits for hobbyists market is forecast to grow by $259.7 million during 2025-2030, accelerating at a 4.0% CAGR during the forecast period.

To understand people’s fascination with miniature models, independent scholar Jörg Jozwiak conducted insightful research. He was surprised that few people had studied it before. He drew on ideas from anthropology, art, literature, and other fields to figure out what makes miniatures so captivating.
He started by looking at the emotional side, why they feel nice or comforting, and then dove into the cognitive side, exploring what our brains get out of them.

Along the way, Jörg Jozwiak outlined ten reasons for the fascination, such as how small-scale art lets us feel in control, sparks empathy, offers a break from reality, helps us learn, or even lets us critique the real world.
In the end, he wrapped up by highlighting five main ideas that explain the appeal of miniatures: they’re easy to access, they create a sense of wonder or enchantment, they showcase impressive craftsmanship, they let us imagine idealized worlds, and they give us unique perspectives on reality.

While the markets have shifted, humans and their love for these miniatures haven’t. In fact, research shows that an ancient Egyptian granary diorama with scribes and their miniature workplace was found in a tomb from around 1980 B.C.
And it’s not just this one; the same tomb also contained other interesting miniature models. While it’s not clear why the ancient Egyptians made these models, scholars think they were meant to support their lost loved ones in the afterlife.

It’s not just about the fascination; creating these miniature models can also benefit our well-being. A 2025 study on miniature mindfulness surveyed people who assemble and paint Warhammer models. In the game, people spend hours meticulously crafting and painting tiny models to use as game pieces. This task demands concentration, patience, and a steady hand.
Researchers discovered that this hobby offers many different ways to engage. As it requires both mind and body to work together on such a detailed, slow-paced task, players easily slip into a “flow state.” In this state of “embodied cognition,” they lose track of time and tune out distractions, which can benefit the brain.

Ellie Roberts creates miniatures and has over 20,000 followers on her Instagram page @miniaturesbyellie. She had tried many different hobbies before. So when she got her first miniature model kit in 2022, she was surprised it was the only hobby that stuck.
“It was the first hobby I enjoyed so much,” she said in an interview with Happiful Magazine. She continued, “Not to be dramatic, but miniature making has saved my life. I had some pretty devastating things happen in my life around the time I started making a miniature record shop, and it was the only thing that got me out of bed in the morning.”

She also explains that being autistic means she often struggles to find the right words to describe how she feels. But working with her hands, building and painting miniatures from scratch, gives her a way to express herself without saying a thing. When she got into the flow of making such models, Ellie found that concentrating on the task gave her a break from a constant stream of anxious thoughts.

Ellie Roberts shared some wonderful advice for beginners: “Get a kit that comes with all the pieces required, along with detailed instructions that break the project down into small steps, to make it feel more doable and less intimidating. It really is the perfect way to learn the basics and to start building up your own miniature supplies, as there are almost always leftover materials and tools that you can save for another project.”
