Cat claws are more architecturally interesting than most people give them credit for. Newborn kittens cannot retract their claws at all, which is information that will make you look at a kitten photo completely differently. But not everyone thinks claws are cute, though. They still consider declawing a solution to the furniture unfurling. It is not. The ASPCA, the American Veterinary Medical Association, and most of the developed world are firmly against it. The UK, Australia, and much of Europe have banned it outright, as have several US states and major cities.

The reason is straightforward and fairly grim once you understand what the procedure actually is. Declawing is not a permanent nail trim. It is the surgical amputation of the last bone of each toe, which in human terms is the equivalent of removing every finger at the top knuckle. A sturdy scratching post covered in sisal rope, placed near the spots your cat already gravitates toward, gives them an appropriate outlet for what is instinctive behavior.

Nail caps, small plastic covers glued over the claws and lasting a few weeks before shedding naturally, are another option that many cats tolerate without much protest. None of these involve surgery, chronic pain, or a vet bill that makes you sit down.

Tigers hold the record for the largest claws of any living cat, reaching up to 10 centimeters in length and built specifically for grappling with prey the size of water buffalo. Most big cats keep their claws retracted in a protective sheath when at rest, which keeps them razor sharp and allows for completely silent movement.

The cheetah is the notable exception, with semi-retractable claws that stay permanently exposed to function like athletic spikes, providing the traction needed to reach 120 kilometers per hour.
