An evening focused on genealogy, archival research, family histories and memoirs that lead to unexpected and powerful revelations.
The Fall 2026 Race, Place and Civic Genealogies Symposium builds on the Summer 2024 symposium held at ASU D.C. that was inspired by a revelatory Washington Post series about US elected officials before 1840 who had ties to enslavement. This fall, we will focus on memoirs, archival research and community connections that confirm the interconnectedness of race and democracy.
Join us for dialogues with Carole Coles Henry, influential Phoenix community leader, Julie Zauzmer Weil, award-winning Washington Post reporter, Debra Bruno, journalist and author of the memoir A Hudson Valley Reckoning: Discovering the Forgotten History of Slaveholding in my Dutch American Family, and Eleanor Mire, a Massachusetts-based family history researcher. The evening symposium will feature short talks and roundtable discussions as well as a book signing and reception.
