Former national co-ordinator for UK counter-terrorism policing Nick Aldworth said investigators make bail decisions based on risk rather than investigative or geopolitical concerns.

His comments come as US president Donald Trump had earlier said he was “surprised” the five men had been freed on bail.

The provision of bail is set from a concrete foundation devoid of political or even investigative influence.

A custody officer will determine if those in custody will present any of a number of statutory risks and if they do not, then bail is usually granted if there is a need to conduct further investigation.

I have every confidence that if the police have released these individuals on bail, that they do not pose any ongoing risks to the public at large. The rest will undoubtedly come out in the ongoing investigation.
