Tradwife Of 30 Years Is Forced To Get Three Jobs After Hubby Leaves Her With Five Kids

On TikTok, we’ll find all kinds of micro-subcultures and fashion aesthetics. We see tradwives, golden retriever boyfriends, pick-me girls, coquettes, gamer boys, and countless, countless others. It’s honestly a bit tiring.

But for many people, these trends reflect their actual lifestyle. Tradwives and their more recent cousins, the “stay-at-home girlfriends,” directly show how some people choose to live, often romanticizing these lifestyles in the process. Mel Ryder, a self-proclaimed “ex-tradwife,” on TikTok is one of them, but her life turned upside down when she could no longer rely on her husband to fund it.

Tradwives are a sought-after aesthetic and lifestyle for many, but it doesn’t always work as planned

Tradwives, housewives, and stay-at-home spouses are becoming an aesthetic trend on social media

Being a tradwife is a lifestyle choice that deserves respect, just like any other. At the same time, professionals have plenty to say about it. While the concept of a “tradwife” has existed for decades, the tradwife aesthetic became a social media trend in 2020. As people were confined to their homes, they started sharing short-form content featuring cooking, bread-making, and a cottagecore aesthetic.

It eventually evolved into a movement, with accounts like Nara Smith’s and Hannah Neeleman’s becoming the faces of modern tradwife content. But ultimately, this is hardly a new concept. Throughout history, we can find plenty of examples of what we now call “tradwives.” In the 1950s, for example, postwar government initiatives promoted the ideal of the suburban housewife, encouraging women to return home and leave factory jobs for returning soldiers to take.

However, a closer look reveals that sociologists often describe this lifestyle as an idealized, sanitized, and highly curated version of domestic life and stay-at-home parenting. This portrayal can erase the realities of unpaid domestic labor, which can lead to physical exhaustion and even social devaluation. It is also a pipeline to ideological concerns for many, like anti-feminist rhetoric, far-right politics, and gender ideologies.

But sociologists and legal experts warn everyone hoping to achieve the same way of living

However, the biggest vulnerability for stay-at-home moms, tradwives, housewives, and everything in between is financial dependence. Granted, TikTok tradwives rarely share the full extent of their social media revenue or the wealth they’ve accumulated, but it’s substantial. Enough to fund leisure, household help, and the time-consuming hobbies they enjoy, like making food from scratch, so ultimately, they have their own safety net.

Most stay-at-home partners, however, have far less financial independence and often leave household authority and decision-making power to the main breadwinner. In a traditional household, that role usually falls to the man. And homemakers without work experience or independent assets can be particularly vulnerable in the event of a divorce or abandonment, as was the case for Ryder.

Jacqueline Harounian, a New York-based attorney, also warns tradwives that the law is changing. In previous decades, courts often stepped in to provide long-term financial security for the partner who managed the household if the marriage ended. That is no longer always the case. In some U.S. states, the higher-earning spouse may retain control of their income, while the financially dependent partner may receive support only for a limited period.

So, with that in mind, what can Mel do? In a follow-up video, the now-working mom confirmed that she had contacted an attorney. Although she may not receive immediate financial support because of her husband’s financial situation, legal experts emphasize that courts can still consider money withdrawn from joint savings or retirement accounts. She might also be entitled to a larger share of the remaining marital assets, such as their home.

So, her future doesn’t look bleak, but the legal battle ahead will likely be difficult.
